The Power of Simply Taking a Deep Breath
by Shiela Dimof of Santosha
Life begins with the our first inhale as a new born baby and ends with an exhale.
Breathing is such a simple act that happens automatically without us even thinking about it. (Thank Goodness!) A beautiful thing about our breath is that by consciously bringing our attention to it, we can quickly change our whole state of being.
Our breath, mental thought process, heart rate, and nervous system are all very interconnected. If we are stressed, the breath stays in the chest and becomes more rapid. By taking just three deep conscious belly breaths, it is impossible to stay in that place of stress. Automatically, the mind calms down, the nervous system starts to relax out of fight or flight, and the heart rate slows as well.
Try it! Before getting out of bed, as soon as you wake up, bring your attention to your breath and trace it up and down your spine slowly 3 times. Pause in a moment of gratitude for the day ahead. Before breakfast or drinking your morning coffee or tea, before eating lunch, before dinner and before bed time try it again!
Each time, make sure to check in with your mental and emotional state before and after. In addition – if you find that you are in a heated conversation or stressful situation, bring your attention to your breath and take 3 conscious deep breaths. No extra time is required, but that extra 3 deep breaths can transform the whole situation and sometimes the whole day!
“In our breathing: we think about or say we are breathing in all 9 fruits of the Spirit AND Phil 4:8 (whatever is true, noble, right, pure, lovely and of good report…think on these things) and breathing out stress and evil.” – Bruce & Dr. Lisa
