Heaven is Awesome…and for Real!
“Daddy remember when I yelled for you when I woked up? Well the reason I was yelling was that Jesus came to get me. He said I had to go back because He was answering your prayer. That’s how come I was yelling for you.” …
Please read this book, “Heaven is for Real” and give it as gifts to those who are questioning Jesus and heaven (and see the picture a Lithuanian girl, Akiane Kramarik, drew this of Jesus she saw in heaven). You will learn so much about our awesome home in heaven for true believers, and how very powerful our prayers are and the Holy Spirit in us. Jesus hears and answers ALL our prayers, and as Colton Burpo saw while in heaven, the Holy Spirit “shoots down power”!
This book is written by Todd Burpo, a minister and Dad of Colton, after being encouraged by many to share their inspirational and life-changing family story. Nearly four year old Colton over many months gradually revealed his experiences in heaven, which occurred while he died for a very short time during an emergency appendectomy and abdominal abscess surgery March 5th, 2003 (his appendix had ruptured undiagnosed 7 days earlier). His parents were never told about this until Colton started talking about heaven several months later.
Todd and Sonja Burpo can tell that what Colton told them was accurate, because Colton knew so many things that no one had ever told or taught him. They also were very careful to write down what Colton told them, but not keep pressing for more information all at one time (because four year olds don’t have long conversations!). For just one example, Colton knew exactly where his parents were during his surgery and what they were doing – Todd was in one room angry at God and praying, and Sonja was in another room talking on her cell phone and praying. No one ever told Colton this or would have ever thought to tell him. Below is my summary of this great book, and get it to read it all for yourself!
Angels at Arby’s
Colton first talked about heaven July 4th, 2003 while on a family car trip. They were passing the hospital where his surgery occurred and Sonja asked him if he remembered the hospital. “Yes Mommy I remember. That’s where the angels sang to me.”
His parents stopped at Arby’s to eat and then asked him what he meant. Colton said, “Dad, Jesus had the angels sing to me because I was scared. I was sitting on Jesus’ lap. They sang “Jesus Loves Me” and “Joshua Fought the Battle of Jericho”. I wanted them to sing “We Will, We Will Rock You” but they wouldn’t. I went up out of my body and I was looking down. I could see the doctors working on my body. I saw you in a little room by yourself praying, and Mommy was in a different room talking and praying.”
Eyewitness to Heaven – more quotes from Colton about heaven
“Dad, Jesus used Dr. O’Holleran to help fix me. You need to pay him.” This was said after Todd had been discussing how expensive the hospital bills were, and he wasn’t sure how they could pay them all. Then after prayer, many people started sending them money that added up to pay almost exactly the hefty bill.
“Jesus told me to be good.”
While at a funeral Todd ministered at and looking at the dead person in the coffin, “He HAD to have Jesus in his heart. He HAD to know Jesus or he won’t get into heaven!”
“Did you know Jesus has a cousin? Jesus told me his cousin baptized him. I don’t remember his name, but he was really nice.”
“Hey Dad, did you know Jesus has a horse? A rainbow horse and I got to pet him. There’s lots of colors in heaven. That’s where all the rainbow colors are.”
“Jesus has markers and brown hair and hair on his face. And his eyes… … … oh Dad, his eyes are SO pretty!”
“Jesus had red markers on him – on his palms and the tops of both feet.”
“His clothes were white, but it was purple from here to here (sash). Jesus was the only one who had purple on Dad. Did you know that? And he had this gold thing on his head and a diamond thing in the middle of it.”
What did you do in heaven? “Home work. Like school. Jesus was my teacher. Jesus gave me work to do and that was my favorite part of heaven. There was lots of kids, Dad.”
What do people look like? “Everybody’s got wings. We all flew except for Jesus. He’s the only one who doesn’t have wings. Jesus went up and down like an elevator. Everyone kind of looks like angels in heaven, with a light above their head.”
How long were you in heaven? “Three minutes.”
People have to die to go to heaven. “Well okay then, I died. But just for a little bit.”
“Daddy remember when I yelled for you when I woked up? Well the reason I was yelling was that Jesus came to get me. He said I had to go back because I He was answering your prayer. That’s how come I was yelling for you.”
Todd wrote, “Most profoundly of all I learned that I am heard. When I was angry at God because I couldn’t hold my son, God’s son was holding my son on his lap.”
Meeting his great grandpa that he had never heard anything about:
“Dad you had a grandpa named Pop didn’t you. He’s really nice. I got to stay with him in heaven. Pop has really big wings and a white and blue from here to here (sash). Pop told me about you and him.” … … Pop died in 1976, and Colton was born in 1999. Told then showed Colton a picture with Pop in it a few years before Pop died. Colton didn’t recognize Pop. Later Todd showed Colton a picture with Pop in his 30’s, and Colton said, “That’s Pop!”
Things Colton told his Mom Sonja:
“Jesus went to Daddy and told him he wanted Daddy to be a pastor. And Daddy said Yes, and Jesus was real happy.”
“Mommy, I have 2 sisters. She died in your tummy. She’s okay, God adopted her. She looked a lot like Cassie but a bit smaller and dark hair. She wouldn’t stop hugging me in heaven. She doesn’t have a name because you guys didn’t name her. She said she can’t wait for you and Daddy to get to heaven.” … … Colton had never been told that his mom had a miscarriage before he was born. It was so early in pregnancy that Todd and Sonja didn’t know it was a girl…
God’s Throne: “It was big Dad, REALLY big because God is the biggest one there is. And He REALLY REALLY loves us Dad. You can’t belieeeeeve how much He loves us. Jesus’ chair is right next to his Dad’s and on the other side is the angel Gabriel. He’s really nice.”
Where did you sit and how did it look? “They brought a little chair for me. I was sitting beside God the Holy Spirit because I was praying for you Dad. You needed the Holy Spirit, so I prayed for you. God and Jesus light up heaven. It never gets dark. It is always light. The gates of heaven have gold and pearls on them. The city was made of something shiny like gold and silver. The flowers and trees were beautiful, and there were animals of every kind.”
Colton talked CONSTANTLY about how much Jesus loves children.
One day Sonja saw a rainbow and showed Colton. He said matter of factly, “Cool. I prayed for that yesterday.”
“Jesus told me he died on the cross so we could go see his Dad.”
Visiting a man dying in a nursing home, Colton grabbed his hand and peered earnestly into his face, “It’s going to be okay. The first person you’re going to see is Jesus.”
“Daddy nobody is old in heaven and nobody wears glasses.”
“Jesus shoots down power for Daddy when he is talking (preaching). It’s the Holy Spirit. I watched him. He showed me.”
After his new little brother Colby was born in 2004, one night Colton began crying because he was missing his sister in heaven.
After watching the movie “The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe”: “There are swords in heaven. Satan’s not in hell yet. The angels carry swords so they can keep Satan out of heaven. Jesus wouldn’t let me have a sword. He said I’d be dangerous. Daddy do you know there is going to be a war? Thw women and children got to stand back and watch. So I stood back and watched. But the men, they had to fight. And Dad, I watched you. You have to fight too. You either get a sword or a bow and arrow, but I don’t remember which. It’s okay Dad, Jesus wins. He throws Satan into hell. I saw it.” …Todd commented that here was the issue of “heaven time” again. Colton had talked about Todd’s past, had seen “dead” people in the present, and also had been shown the future. Maybe in heaven, time isn’t linear.
“Jesus told me that if you don’t go to heaven, you don’t get a new body.”
Colton saw Mary mother of Jesus: “She still loves Him like a Mom.”
Did you see Satan? “Yeah I did.” Colton was very solemn. After Todd asked him what he looked like, Colton’s body went rigid, he grimaced, and his eyes narrowed to a squint. He stopped talking, very dis-concertedly absolutely shut down, and would never talk more about it.
After showing Colton many pictures of Jesus, finally in 2006 when Todd showed him the picture drawn by Akiane, “Dad, that one’s right.”
How has Colton’s experience changed Todd and Sonja? “First it broke us, and we learned the value of being vulnerable and let others bless us. And we are bolder and talk about what happened to our son.”
Colton now is a normal boy, son, and brother. When asked what to name this book, Todd suggested Heaven by Four; Sonja suggested Heaven, According to Colton; older sister Cassie suggested He’s Back but He’s No Angel; and without hesitation Colton said, “I want them to know heaven is for real.”
My thanks to the Burpo’s, and especially our great God and Lord and savior Jesus for this book and our AWESOME home in heaven for believers. After reading this book my faith has been so strengthened, and I must keep praising our Lord and working to bring all to know and believe and be saved. I so work with each prayer to remember Jesus hears ALL, and He loves us SO, and He shoots down his great power into us!!!
